Root Words!
"Why should we learn root words? They won't help us."
Actually, about 60% of our English words come from a Greek or Latin root. Learning a single root (base) or pattern can help aid in the understanding of around 20 or more English words! Besides, most academic words in English (e.g., math and science) are derived from Latin and Greek. Teaching roots will teach students to "look inside" of words for familiar letters, word families, and other patters. Understanding words will help with reading comprehension too!
For example,
Knowing the base "tract" (to pull, draw or drag) can help students
understand words such as: tractor, retract, detract, trace and retrace.
Each day we will be working with our roots and learning with mnemonic devices, hand movements, drawings and a visual word wall. There will be a packet sent home on Mondays and we will be quizzed on our roots Fridays - please note that this is different than our spelling.
Enjoy being a "word detective"!

What do I have to do?
Each Monday you will receive a new root words packet that we will work on every day in class (look below for the packets). Each packet will be due on Friday when you have your root word quiz. Also during the week, you will log on to Spelling City to work on five assignments that I have on there. You will have time to work on them during your "Word Work" time. You will earn points for your turned in packets and your online assignments.
